Prepare Now
Disaster-Proof Pet
Some of the most heartbreaking images from recent disasters were of all the pets left behind. Pet owners need to do a little advance planning now to make sure they don't face some excruciating decisions later on.
- Check to be sure your pet is up date on all its shots and tags.
- Include an ample supply of pet food and a leash or carrying case in your bug-out stash.
- Talk to your neighbors about setting up a four-legged version of the same sort of “Family Circle” described in “Devise Communications Plan,” in case a disaster prevents you from getting home to rescue your pet.
- Identify shelters or hotels along your possible evacuation route that accept pets. Most hotels relax their prohibitions against pets during a disaster; still it's best to check. Most shelters won't allow pets, but some communities have begun to set up special “pet shelters.” Ask your vet if he knows of one near you.
