Traditional advice was to lay in enough food and water to last three days. Since the devastating hurricanes of the past few years, that advice has been revised upward to at least two weeks — or up to three months, if you really want to be covered in the event there's an avian flu epidemic. To prevent spoilage, rotate the supplies in with the food you're eating every six months, then restock. Below is a sample grocery list for a typical family of four. Adjust quantities up or down according to the head count of your family. As for water — technically you're supposed to figure on a gallon per person per day — if you're limited on storage space just buy as much as you have room for, but then count on having to run out for more later.
